Labor’s Shadow Minister for Health Nicola Roxon and Labor candidate for Cowan Liz Prime met with hospital executives at Joondalup Health Campus on Monday.

Ms Roxon was particularly keen to investigate the unique private / public partnership operating at Joondalup, and to hear about the hospital’s expansion plans.

“Labor recognises that we have a truly mixed health sector in Australia, which benefits from both strong public and private investment,” said Ms Roxon.

“We are very interested in looking beyond the old public / private debate - and the interaction of private and public services at Joondalup Health Campus may well provide some inspiration for future direction in this area.”

Ms Roxon stressed that Federal Labor wanted to tackle the broader structural issues which affect the affordability and quality of health care delivery and that challenge the long term sustainability of our health system.

“Not only do we want to work on the most effective public / private arrangements, but Labor also wants to make prevention a key component of our health system.”

Federal Labor’s New Directions paper - Fresh Ideas, Future Economy: Preventative health care for our families and our future economy, recently launched by Labor leader Kevin Rudd – highlights how Federal Labor will sharpen Australia’s health focus on the prevention of chronic illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and asthma.

“We recognise the need to invest in the health of future generations, not only to relieve pressures on our hospitals, but also to enhance our workforce participation, productivity growth and the impact on the overall economy,” said Ms Roxon.

In addition to her visit to the federal seat of Cowan, Ms Roxon’s five day visit to Perth also included a health forum at Bentley Park and consultation with parents in Mirrabooka on Labor’s Healthy Kids Check plan.
