| Hospital managers, executives and senior clinicians have learned how to reduce adverse events and improve hospitals' performance at a seminar held in Hobart yesterday. The seminar was the first in a series being presented nationally, hosted by the Australian Healthcare Association and facilitated by Dr Kathryn Antioch. The Australian Healthcare Association (AHA) is the peak national body representing Australia's public hospitals, aged and community care facilities. "Reducing errors in hospitals is a key aim of hospitals and this issue has been nominated by Health Minister Tony Abbott as a priority for the federal government in the upcoming Australian Healthcare Agreements," Ms Prue Power, AHA Executive Director, said today. "These seminars focus on integrating financial and clinical evidence into clinical practice guidelines, which entails major change management processes. The practical and evidence-based strategies outlined in the session include: directing key committees; encouraging local ownership of the process; training and involving staff in the methodological approach; and evaluating the change management process. "AHA hopes that the seminar series will promote national consistency in the use of financial and clinical evidence throughout Australia's hospital system. "I am delighted that Dr Kathryn Antioch has agreed to facilitate these seminars and provide participants with the benefit of her broad experience within the hospital sector," Ms Power said. Dr Antioch has worked with a number of hospitals in Victoria during her seven years as Principal Adviser to the CEO of Bayside Health and previous to this in her role as a management consultant. She published results of her work in the European Journal of Health Economics, the Australian Health Review and Western Weekly. Dr Antioch has also been appointed by the Federal Health Minister to the National Health Committee of the NHMRC, which has a focus on Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) and integrating evidence into clinical practice. She has conducted similar seminars for the International Cochrane Colloquium and the 2006 European Health Economists Conference. "Seminars will be held in all states and territories and will assist hospital CEOs, senior managers and clinicians in achieving their goal of a safer hospital system for all," Ms Power said.
