Obstetric Safety Net: Don’t hurt patients in the name of savings warn specialist doctors |

| Australia’s peak group of specialist obstetricians and gynaecologists today warned the Federal Government not to punish women and their families because they chose to seek help with their pregnancy and births from doctors in the private sector rather than the overwhelmed public hospitals system. Dr. Andrew Pesce, President of the National Association of Specialist Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, welcomed reports today that the Government may adopt part of its plan of providing greater assistance to doctors and their patients in regional and rural area through enhanced Medicare Benefits Scheme payments. But Dr. Pesce said the Government would do more harm than good if it simply capped the safety net limits for obstetrics for the rest of the country.
